Mardi Gras Costumes – Wild and Festive on Fat Tuesday

Have a Mardi Gras party to go to? Can you find a sexy Mardi Gras costume on the internet? Sure you can! Flamboyant, erotic and wild, these costumes emphasize the exotic spirit of the Carnival, with lots of green, purple and gold (the official colors of the New Orleans’ festivities), glitter and spiky clothing. Complete your attire with a traditional Venetian mask, flashy beads and boas.

Why Do We Celebrate Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a period of 46 days before Easter. Some people mistakenly believe Mardi Gras is the start of celebrations. Nope, it’s the final day. Lent is celebrated in mainly Catholic countries, and is a period where Christians forgo meat, or at least deny oneself from something, be it a favorite food or activity (yes, bodily pleasures is one of them!)

This means that the weeks leading up to Lent is a perfect excuse for festivities and banquets before this austere period begins. The largest and most famous mardigras celebrations occur in New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, where both cities have been putting on carnivals for hundreds of years. Both traditions were originally imported from France and Europe, where some form of festivities before Lent have been occurring for thousands of years, going back to pagan times when it was filled with drinking and debauchery. Today . . . well, not much has changed.

Communities around the world celebrate Mardi Gras in some form or another, be it masquerade costume parties, balls, or feasting. There’s very likely a few parties going on in your neighborhood. Grab those beads and a mask and get celebrating!

Need a few ideas on what to wear to Mardi Gras? As many parades have an appointed king or queen, costumes relating to royalty are common. Jesters, tricksters and pixies are also common themes. Mardi Gras celebrations often have an erotic and wild side, so slip into that slinky outfit and mask and have yourself some sexy fun.
